Throughout our time in Year 6, we have been working our way through the PSHE curriculum. On 28th June, we will be covering the non-statutory element of PSHE – conception/sex education. Although this is not a statutory area of the curriculum (meaning that you do have the right to withdraw your child from these lessons), we believe that our children at Stanley are emotionally ready to learn about this, and believe that it is important to have a basic understanding before they move to high school. Rest assured that the lessons are taught in a safe and understanding environment, and from a level that is recommended by the PSHE Association, and backed by our PSHE scheme, 1decision.
So that you are able to make an informed decision, and so that we may answer any questions or concerns that you may have, you are invited to come into school at 15:30 on Wednesday 22nd June 2022 to view the video that we will be sharing with the children. During this time, we will provide a separate classroom, together with a member of staff, for your child to wait.
All sex education / conception activities and discussions will be centred around the content of the video that you are invited to watch. During the lessons, we anticipate that the children will ask questions around the topics and we will endeavour to answer them honestly, factually and in the context of safe, supportive, loving, and caring relationships. However, if we feel that the question is pushing the boundaries of what we deem to be appropriate for whole class Y6 discussions, we will instead suggest that they speak to you at home about it.
Having considered all of this, if you wish to withdraw your child from the Sex Education sessions, or if you have any concerns or questions around these sensitive topics, please do not hesitate to contact us.
If you do wish to join us on 22nd June, please email us at email@example.com as soon as possible to confirm. Thank you.
